Chamberlain Street NSSP Project Reconsidered
The City’s project to make over Chamberlain Street and enhance the pedestrian and bicycle crossing of Reed Market is now on indefinite hold. The City Council heard the desire to return to SCNA’s original request of putting in a safe pedestrian and bicycle crossing of Reed Market at Silver Lake Boulevard. Thanks to Councilors Mike Riley, Gina Franzosa and Steve Platt who took the time to understand what’s important to our neighborhoods.
The Reed Market crossing is part of the City’s Neighborhood Street Safety Program (NSSP), which includes a goal to create safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists to use. The plan included using Silver Lake Boulevard, but then diverted the route to Chamberlain’s existing crossing before returning to Silver Lake. That crossing is unsafe because of the poor sight lines for vehicles to see the crosswalk and people in it, along with the speed of vehicles at that point on Reed Market. SCNA’s Board will continue to work with the City to get a crossing at Silver Lake Boulevard with crosswalk lights installed.
