​Bend, OR— September 10, 2017 — Funded by the City of Bend and sponsored by the Deschutes Brewery, Atlas Cider, Safeway, and Cascade Ice to name a few, the newly revived Southern Crossing Neighborhood Association (SCNA) is holding its third General Membership Meeting / First Annual Picnic and Neighborhood Trash Pickup Saturday, September 16, at Blakely Park (1155 Brookswood Ave.). The set up for the event starts at 10 am. We are always looking for volunteers! The SCNA is a forum for fostering an ongoing sense of civic responsibility.

We are lucky to live in Bend surrounded by stark beauty everywhere you turn—it’s a tragedy to see so much litter piling up along the sides our roads. Neighborhood trash pickups are an ideal program for neighborhood associations.

This is a big event for the SCNA! Neighborhood associations are not for profit organizations. We operate on a lean budget:  $1,804 annually after insurance, which is why we are looking for additional sponsors to partner with the SCNA for this fast-approaching event.  

It’s not too late! There are a number of ways you can sponsor this event:

• Make a donation (to help offset the cost of mailing invitations to 1760 tax, t-shirts, and associated costs)
• Donate a grocery gift card to help offset the costs of the picnic supplies
• Donate food, beer, wine or other soft beverages
• Donate supplies (or funds) for a neighborhood pickup like grabbers i.e., pickup and reaching tools, garbage bags, and rubber gloves
• Join us for this first annual event!

In return, we will recognize donors on a banner/poster at the picnic and include your logo. In the future, we will give you early opportunities to have name recognition in mailers in advance of the event. 

If you live (own or rent), or work in the Southern Crossing Neighborhood, you’re invited! Bring your family, portable chairs, and if time permits, a side dish. Be prepared to have fun…

The mission of the SCNA is to provide a forum and to encourage a collaborative process where all those living in the geographic boundaries can discuss and act upon core issues, which impact the livability of the neighborhood. The SCNA is located on both sides of the Deschutes River in the general vicinity of the Old Mill District. Its boundaries are the Parkway and Colorado Avenue, east to west, and between Arizona and Powers, north to south. The SCNA is one of 13 neighborhood associations (see map) that were originally formed in 2003. The Southern Crossing faces several livability issues including rapid development, safety, transportation, and infrastructure. We would also like to build general membership and are working to get more businesses and HOAs to participate. It’s important to have broad participation in order to have fair and equitable representation.
 
The neighborhood association largest goal is to see the construction of an accessibility pedestrian/bikeway bridge built over Highway 97 at Reed Lane to provide safe passage over the highway.
